For many, it was sport, not unlike a carnival. A job well done! They had successfully helped force the Jews into a sealed, isolated cauldron - the Warsaw Ghetto. Their local police then surrounded the perimeter of the ghetto, keeping the Jews inside, ensuring that desperately needed food and other critical, life-sustaining supplies did not enter the ghetto. They were often most exacting in their efforts.
Now it was time to relax and view the scene. Sitting on their tiny balconies or gazing from their windows, they watched the ghetto burn with over 70,000 of their Jewish neighbors being overcome by the insatiable flames.
"The bugs are burning," one said to the other. "The bugs are burning."
Throughout much of eastern and central Europe, more than 1 million Jews died during the Holocaust at the hands of their neighbors and countrymen. This book tells their story.
